…until the biggest weekend that, perhaps, Cleethorpes has ever seen!

In about seven weeks time, from 20th to 26th June, the whole borough will be getting ready to celebrate Armed Forces Day – and in case you haven’t heard, this will be the official, national event! There are still loads of details to be released, but so far we know that…

  • There will be a number of events in the days and week before, including the arrival of the Armed Forces Day flag, Cleethorpes Town football teams v Army Football Mens First and Women’s First teams, and the Longest Day 5K in Cleethorpes.
  • Celebrations will begin on Friday with stalls, music and fireworks.
  • Armed Forces Day (Saturday) will have Military and Veterans Parades, air and ground displays – including the Red Arrows – music, fireworks and much, much more (and hopefully some VIPs…)
  • There will be a family fun day on the Sunday.

I genuinely can not wait! As soon as the news was announced at last year’s event, the whole resort got excited – and now it’s nearly here! The Armed Forces Cleethorpes team gave us all a little preview on the Queen’s 90th Birthday, and held a firework display alongside the lighting of the Birthday Beacon at Ross Castle. It was a wonderful evening with hundreds of people turning out – just a glimpse of the atmosphere to expect during Armed Forces Weekend.

There is no doubt that this is a great year for North East Lincolnshire. Just last month, Cleethorpes Pier, which was beautifully refurbished as a ballroom, restaurant and tea room last year, was named as ‘National Pier of the Year’, and in July, the first ever Great Grimsby 10K will take place. There is the usual Cleethorpes Carnival, Cleethorpes Rocks, CleeFest and Scooter Rally, and, brand new for this year, is the Heritage Fayre! This will be a vintage-inspired event with singers, children’s rides, a 1960s bus, ice-cream trolleys and a market, held within the square outside the Fishing Heritage Centre by the Bandstand and River Freshney. Plus, there will be another date to keep in your diary, being announced very soon…

Make sure you take a look at the Armed Forces Cleethorpes website for updates and more information about Armed Forces Day, and if you’re visiting the area (or even if you live here!), download the DiscoverNEL app; it has suggestions for restaurants and places to visit, as well as some special offers – very handy!
